The professional shows up daily

What do you commit to daily, even if you don’t feel like it?

The amateur works only when they feel like it. They plan to write that first draft, but then it’s sunny out, so they go to the beach. They would like to go for a run, but it’s raining, so TV is more inviting. They hoped to go to the event, but then they couldn’t be bothered.

The professional shows up every day. They do the work required of them, even when they don’t feel like it. They are not bothered by the weather or other externalities, as they are focused on the bigger picture of where they are going. They know that every day is a process of showing up and doing the work.

It’s hard to make the leap from amateur to professional, and that’s why not many people do it. Not everyone likes being on the hook for their output.

People see being responsible for something as a constraint. So they avoid getting serious. But there is actually freedom in limitations. As Jocko Willink says, “discipline equals freedom”. New opportunities emerge through disciplined and focused hard work. There are no shortcuts.

In a world of endless options but limited time, one of the most meaningful things you can do is decide on one (or a few) things and commit to doing them well every day.

Shifting your mindset from amateur to professional unlocks greatness.
