“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
Viktor Frankl
Life can suddenly change in the space of a day. Yesterday things seemed to be smooth sailing, and everything was fine. We were optimistic about the future.
But today, it can all change. Perhaps some shocking news is delivered, or an unforeseen disaster strikes.
It feels like life will never be the same.
Why does this happen?
Who can we blame?
Often we have no control over these circumstances. It’s just a part of being human and living life. Things happen.
We usually blame ourselves. But does this actually help the situation? It makes us feel worse.
Another way
We do have the ability to choose our attitude towards these terrible circumstances.
“Every day, every hour, offered the opportunity to make a decision, a decision which determined whether you would or would not submit to those powers which threatened to rob you of your very self, your inner freedom.”
Viktor Frankl
If we happen to be a witness to this experience unfolding in someone else’s life, then we have the opportunity to choose compassion and support.
Reflection
- How can I better support those I care about through a difficult circumstance?
