The courage to begin

We seem to have a lot of trouble beginning. It’s hard to let go of old ways and venture into something new. Inertia is a powerful thing. It’s like we are wearing concrete boots and stuck to the ground. We make some slight progress forward, but then we slip and roll back down the hill. So it seems easier just to give it all up and stay where we are.

But where is the joy in that? The feeling of not growing eats away at our soul causes more damage over time. The best thing to do is start, take that courageous first step, face those obstacles, and continually pick ourselves up again and again. Keep pressing forward. It’s like penetrating a deep forest with a machete stripping away the messy layers of confusion and overwhelm. We find some small wins, and gradually we make some solid progress. What was once impossible starts to seem possible.
