You are what you choose to become

“I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.”

Carl Jung

It’s time to let go of what happened in the past. Maybe you accepted the wrong job and got stuck in an unfulfilling career. Perhaps you made terrible choices which cost you some relationships, time or money.

It’s important we still reflect on those wrong choices of the past that didn’t work out for us. Learn from them, but don’t dwell on them.

As Carl Jung stated, we are not what happened to us; we are what we choose to become. Regardless of what happened in the past, we have the power in the present to shape ourselves into who we want to become.

This starts with thinking about our future self and who we would like to become. We need to create a vivid picture of what this ideal life would be like. We should try and consider every aspect of this life and build some motivation for something to move towards.

Now we should consider our current recurring behaviours and habits. These may not be aligned with our future self or could be preventing it from ever becoming a reality. What would happen if we continue down this path of bad habits? This should give us some motivation for something to move away from.

Reflection

  • What is my ideal future self in 5 or 10 years?
  • How are my current choices getting in the way of becoming this future self?
  • What new practices can I implement today to move towards this future self?
