“When two extreme opinions meet, the truth lies generally somewhere in the middle. Without exposure to the other side, you will naturally drift toward the extremes and away from the truth of the matter.”
Annie Duke
When is the last time you changed your mind on an opinion?
We get caught up in our own little bubble with those who have the same opinion. We reinforce each others beliefs and forget that there are others out there who may think differently.
Then when we come across these people with opposing views, we get agitated, and double down on our beliefs, often becoming more extreme. We just want to be “right” without really weighing up the facts.
Sometimes our views aren’t even our own, maybe we where born into them through our location, or parent’s beliefs. What if you were born on the opposite side of the world in totally different circumstances, would you still have the same beliefs?
Maybe it’s time to question some of those opinions and beliefs. See what’s really behind them. There is much out there to learn. Be open to changing your mind. This starts by having conversations with those we may disagree with. Listen honestly and productively play the devil’s advocate.
Be open to possibility.
Reflection
- What is one thing I feel strongly about? How did this belief come about?
- What is one opinion I have changed my mind on in the past?
- How can I change my perspective to seek out those I disagree with and get closer to the truth?
