Caught in the past and future

“If you’re not mindful, you might spend much of your day feeling like you’re fleeing a burning building or swimming to dry land after a shipwreck.”

Sam Harris

We spend much of our time thinking about the past and future.

We can’t change what happened in the past, although we can learn from it. And much of the future is outside of our control, although we can prepare for it.

The learning and preparation happen in the now. It requires some form of action.

The never-ending rumination on who wronged us or what disaster may or may not affect us probably isn’t helping.

These thought patterns can spiral out of control and take over our day if we are not careful.

Pay attention to your thoughts.

What about spending more time in the present? This is where our life is. Right here and right now.

Reflection

  • I will let the thoughts that do not serve me pass and instead focus on concrete action in the present.
