“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”
Plato
“Ah, music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here!” – J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Do you ever wake up feeling drained and unhappy for no apparent reason? And you wonder, “how can I snap myself out of this?”.
I found something that helps me.
This morning I awoke exhausted and feeling down. I can’t really pin a reason why this is. On all fronts, it has been a relatively healthy and normal week.
I tried to snap myself out of this state by having a coffee and then going for a walk. Getting out in nature usually does it for me, but this time it did not work.
Next, I tried meditating. This pause brought me some sense of clarity, but I still couldn’t shake that blue feeling.
I also tried viewing some inspirational videos, which actually had the opposite effect to what I intended. It left me anxious about all the things I know I should be doing.
Without even thinking about it, I opened my Spotify and put on some music while cleaning up around the house.
Suddenly I started to feel a little more upbeat. I was moving around and felt alive.
I was felt inspired and revitalised.
Music changed me.
I was now excited and ready to take on the day.
Music can have a profound impact on our well-being. It’s easy to get caught up listening to audiobooks, news, and podcasts. We think we need to be constantly learning and growing.
But don’t forget about music.
Music is not wasted time.
Music has the power to snap us out of an unproductive emotional state. It can comfort us when we are feeling down or going through a difficult time. It can bring us joy and nostalgia while we dance and sing along in our lounge room.
Reflection
- When feeling down or unproductive, I will put on some music. See what happens.
