Know it alls
“Nobody knows anything…… Not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what’s going to work. Every time out it’s a guess and, if you’re lucky, an educated one.”
William Goldman
Many people give off the idea that they have it all figured out. They could be successful or unsuccessful. Either way they talk the talk. They have certainty.
But do they really? Or is this just a projection to make themselves feel more secure?
Does anyone really have it all figured out? I know I don’t.
Your voice
“There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen”
Rumi
The “know it alls” will try and tell you what to do. They will tell you what the latest trend is, what job to take, or what business to start. But how do they really know?
Don’t let people tell you what to do. Follow your own muse. Listen to the inner voice telling you what is right and wrong. Develop your outer voice. Your own style.
There will be plenty of mistakes on the way. That is where the real lessons are learned and growth happens. It builds a lot more character than just someone telling you what to do.
Real security
“The only real security that a man can have in the world is a reserve of knowledge, experience and ability.”
Henry Ford
True security is knowing that you can tackle any challenge that arises. The world is changing fast and failures will occur. But you can forge an unshakable mindset. Invest in yourself. Take on challenges that stretch you. Become more confident and resilient.
You will be much more fulfilled and engaged in your work. That is the best chance you have.
Reflection questions
- Is pretending I have it all figured out preventing me from real learning?
- How could I better embrace the possibility of the unknown?
- Have I have I regularly been letting others make big decisions for me?
- How can I better listen to my inner voice and develop my outer voice?
- What can I do to invest in myself? What challenges can I welcome?
After all, nobody really knows.
